Chess Kit Training Tactics Zugzwang

This is a German word, not easy to translate into English; The best rendering is perhaps "Compelled to move". It refers to a position in which a player is not menaced, but which results in loss for him as soon as he makes a move. Thus defining 'Zugzwang', Fred explains the theme by several examples. This is the basic underlying idea of zugzwang: having to move, which is supposed to be an asset and a blessing, becomes a liability and a curse.
